statue in front of the bank in Heraklion - timeless meeting

“You cannot control your parentage, but you can choose your legacy”

The copper statue on your left in front of the bank is called ‘Timeless meeting’ and it represents three Cretan masters from different eras in history.

On the left is philosopher and writer Nikos Kazantzakis. He was born in 1882 in Mirtia and buried here in Heraklion in 1957.

The middle figure represents Dominikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco. He was born in the village of Fodele and built his painting career mainly in Spain.

Finally, on the right you’ll see the poet Vitsentzos Kornaros. He’s the person who wrote the famous Erotókritos. He lived from 1558 to 1613.

The statues were made by artist Aspasia Papadoperaki and they were revealed in 2003.

A famous quote concerning this statue says:
“You cannot control your parentage, but you can choose your legacy.”

This is where I’ll be leaving you.
